Swami went to school feeling that he was the worst boy on earth. His conscience bothered him. He wasn’t at all sure if his description of Samuel had been accurate. He felt that he had mixed up the real and the imagined.

Swami stopped on the road side to make up his mind about Samuel. Samuel was not such a bad man after all. Personally he was much more friendly than the other teachers. Swami also felt Samuel had a special regard for him.

Swami’s head was dizzy with confusion. He could not decide if Samuel really deserved the allegations made against him in the letter. The more he thought of Samuel, the more Swami grieved for him. To recall Samuel’s dark faces, his thin moustache, unshaven cheek and yellow coat filled Swaminathan with sorrow.

3. Read the following passage and answer the questions that follow:

World Environment Day is celebrated on June 5 all across the globe to spread the importance of conserving planet Earth, our one and only real home.

The theme for 2022, ‘Only One Earth’ focuses on our role as the citizens of the Earth, to protect the environment and to encourage sustainable living everywhere and every day.

It has become imperative to talk about climate change, pollution and its effect on our fragile ecosystem and to be able to live in a healthy environment as our basic human rights.

The World Environment Day is an initiative of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP):

In 1972 for the first time in the world a conference on the environment was held in Stockholm – United Nations, Conference on the Human Environment, which is also known as the Stockholm Conference. This gave birth to the World Environment Day and also created the United Nations Environment Programme.

Some of the important themes from the recent years were: Beat Plastic Polllution (2018, India), Air Pollution (2019, China), Celebrate Biodiversity (2020, Columbia and Germany) and Ecosystem Restoration (2021, Pakistan).

The year 2022 marks the 50-year anniversary of the 1972 Stockholm Conference, and this year’s host country is Sweden, the place from where it all started. Only One Earth is all about living sustainably; the most importantly every citizen on this earth must pledge to save it.
