As he entered the school gate, an idea occurred to him. He would deliver the letter to the headmaster at the end of the day. There was a chance Samuel might do something during the course of the day to justify the letter.

Swami stood at the entrance to his class. Samuel was teaching arithmetic. He looked at Swami. Swami hoped Samuel would scold him severely.

“You are half an hour late,” Samuel said.

“I have a headache, sir.” Swami said.

“Then why did you come at all?”

This was an unexpected question from Samuel.

Swami said, “My father said I shouldn’t miss school. sir.”

Samuel looked impressed. “Your father is quite right. We want more parents like him.”

“Oh, you poor man!” Swami thought, “You don’t know what my father has done to you.

“All right, go to your seat.”

Swami sat down, feeling sad. He had never met anyone as good as Samuel.

Read the following passage and answer the questions that follow:

Jalpaiguri : Foresters finally managed to cage the leopard that was on the prowl in Nagrakata’s Kabuldanga in the Khasbastee area for the past three days. Forest workers had to struggle a lot to net the animal which was in its prime. On Wednesday it had also mauled two forest guards when they were trying to net it. On Thursday, foresters from Khunai and Binnaguri wild life squads reached the spot. They laid two cages to nab the animal. But the big cat chased them, following which they had to take shelter inside the two meant to catch the animal. After hours the animal was finally tranquilized and netted. It was taken to Garumara National Park. Around 100 leopards have been rescued from North Bengal over the post eight years and in most cases the animals which are under the co-predator section in the tiger conservation programme, were rescued from tea gardens. The garden bushes provide natural cover for the animals who often use the drains of gardens as their hiding place especially when the females are about to give birth the cubs.

Excursion to the Sundarbans

This is to inform all the students of classes IX to XII that the school is going to organise an excursion to the Sundarbans, the largest mangrove forest in the world and a UNESCO World Heritage Site[^1^][1], from 20th to 24th January 2024.

The interested students are required to register their names with their respective class teachers by 20th December 2023. The total cost of the trip is Rs. 10,000 per student, which includes transportation, food, accommodation, and entry fees. The students will be staying in eco-friendly cottages at the Sundarbans Tiger Camp[^2^][2], where they will also enjoy cultural programs and wildlife documentaries. The students will also visit various attractions in the Sundarbans, such as the Sajnekhali Watch Tower, the Sudhanyakhali Watch Tower, the Dobanki Canopy Walk, and the Netidhopani Temple.

8. Write a report about a street accident in your locality in about 100 words with the following points:

Report on a Street Accident

A fatal street accident took place in our locality on 13th December 2023 at around 9 p.m. A private car hit a scooter near the crossroad of MG Road and Park Street. The scooterist, a young man, died on the spot due to severe head injuries. The car owner, who was driving rashly, fled the scene leaving behind his car.

The police arrived late at the spot, which angered the local people. They staged a protest and blocked the road, demanding justice for the victim and action against the car owner. The situation turned violent as some protesters started pelting stones at the police and the car. The police had to use tear gas and batons to disperse the mob and clear the road.

The situation was brought under control after an hour. The police seized the car and took the body of the scooterist to the hospital for post-mortem. The police also registered a case of hit-and-run and started a search for the car owner. The identity of the victim and the car owner are yet to be revealed.

 

9. Study the following flowchart and describe ‘How Bread is made’ (within 100 words) using the following points:

– Next, the ingredients are mixed up in a large bowl or a mixer to form a sticky dough.
– Then, the dough is kneaded by hand or by a machine until it becomes smooth and elastic.
– After that, the dough is divided into one pound pieces and rolled and shaped into loaves or other forms.
– The shaped dough is then placed in greased pans and left to rise in a warm place until it doubles in size.
– The risen dough is then baked in a preheated oven for 20 to 30 minutes or until golden brown.
– Finally, the baked bread is removed from the oven and the pans and allowed to cool on a wire rack.
– The bread is then sliced and wrapped in paper and ready for the market.
